Veronica slowly lifted up a hand. “Since Tanya was brave enough to spill her story, then I’ll go next. I’m not sure if I have a fear, but I guess…maybe I do. Growing up, I remember my parents putting so much pressure on me. On all of us. I have four siblings, and my mom and dad always said that we had to be better than the best. My mom wanted me to become a doctor, and now she always makes some comment about how I’m too good for nursing, that I’m smart enough to be a doctor, that I’m wasting my ‘potential.’”

“Well, do you like nursing?” asked Maria in a tone of honest curiosity. It wasn’t common that you could find someone who didn’t immediately judge others. I guess Maria had learned how to be inquisitive without being nosy, and curious without being judgmental.

“Of course! I love it. I think it’s fulfilling to help people directly,” said Veronica. “If you’re a doctor, you have to make about 1,000 rounds per day, and you might not even spend fifteen minutes with a patient, but when you’re a nurse, you can really help the people in your care, and I love seeing the progress they make. It’s not about being ‘smart’ enough. People underestimate just how much work nursing takes. We’re the backbone of the hospital. I wouldn’t have any other job.”

“So, what happened with your magic?” asked Maria.

Veronica tucked one braid behind her ear. “Well, they pushed my siblings and me so hard on everything. School. Work. Extracurricular activities. I just couldn’t add one more single thing to my plate. I guess it felt like if I was ‘naturally’ bad at magic, then maybe they wouldn’t push me so hard. But then, of course, that only made them push harder, which made me want to do magic even less. I guess the fear was that I would never meet their expectations, so why even try?”

It was Dana’s turn to offer comfort. She leaned over and gave Veronica a huge side-squeeze. “I’m almost the opposite,” said Dana. “I was always afraid that I’d be compared to my parents.”

“Really?” I was flabbergasted. I never would have expected that Dana was afraid of our parents.

“Really. Don’t you remember growing up and seeing all the awards and stuff Mom and Dad received from the various covens?”

“Sure, but I didn’t think much of it.”

“Well, I did,” replied Dana. “Growing up with them was like growing up with Superman and Wonder Woman as your parents. Yeah, I was super proud of them, and in awe…” Dana crunched into a s’more.

“Maybe too much in awe?” prompted Maria.

“I guess. I always thought that they were the greatest magicians in the world. Every little kid thinks that about their parents, but…everyone always said something wherever I went. ‘Oh, you’re going to be powerful, just like Cynthia and David,’ or the opposite—kids at school would be mean about it.” Dana stood and placed her hands on her hips and affected a falsetto tone.
